Brief History Of Online Bingo

The origins of online Bingo date back several hundreds of years. In what is estimated to have been around the year 1530, a lottery-style game called Il Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia was being played in Italy. By the 18th Century, the game had spread to other parts of Europe, including France. The French variation of this game featured playing cards accompanied by tokens.

The calling out and matching of numbers were then added into the core structure of the game. As the game continued to evolve, it became more widely played in Germany, where it was used as an aid to help children learn spelling, multiplication tables and animal names.

In 1778, a French game called Le Lotto came to be. It featured 17 squares laid out in three rows and nine columns. Five of these squares in each row had numbers ranging from one, and then all the way up to 90. This is what helped form the basic design of the game that we know and love today at most online casinos in New Zealand.

By the beginning of the 1920s, Bingo was beginning to become more standardized. A man named Hugh J. Ward crafted the game specifically for carnivals in and around Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania in the United States. He then went on to copyright it and publish the very first rule book of Bingo in 1933.

Another theory of how Bingo became so popular has to do with a man named Edwin Lowe. In December of 1929, he attended a travelling carnival in Atlanta. This is where he saw crowds of people playing a game called “Beano”. Their variation of the game had players using dried up beans, a rubber stamp and sheets of cardboard. Mr Lowe then took this game to New York, where his friends delighted in playing it. The game came with two versions – one could buy a 12-card set for $1 or a 24-card set for $2. By the time the 1940 rolled around, there were Bingo games being played all over the United States.

One thing that remains uncertain is exactly where the name “Bingo” actually came from. Some theories suggest that it dates to the middle of the 1920s. There have been claims that one of Lowe’s friends yelled out “Bingo!” instead of “Beano!” out of pure excitement when he won a game, and the iconic name has stuck ever since.

The transition to online Bingo came in 1996, when a free game called “Bingo Zone” was launched online. In order to play, players simply needed to provide information about their demographics. They then were fed targeted advertisements based on the information they provided. Just two years later, in 1998, Uproar launched “Bingo Blitz”. This game helped further elevate Bingo’s status as a popular online game.

Of course, as the game continued to grow in popularity throughout the world, different versions of it were developed.

Take a look at the most popular versions you’ll find online:

30 Ball Bingo

30 Ball Bingo is perfect for players who want to get a game or two in but are restricted for time. Also referred to as a “supercharged” version of the game, the 30-ball variation boasts a grid measuring in three-by-three cards.

Due to the size and pace of 30 Ball Bingo, this game generally only offers one single prize.

75 Ball Bingo

For players who have more time on their hands, games of Bingo featuring 75 balls and up are available online. In 75-ball Bingo, players will have to work within 25 squares that have been organised into five rows of five numbers each. Players need to complete the pre-determined pattern by marking off the numbers that have been called out to win.

Usually, this pattern takes the form of a single line that runs across the entirety of the Bingo card, down it or diagonally.

80 Ball Bingo

While the difference between 75-ball Bingo and 80-ball Bingo may seem negligible at first, those five balls can make a big impact on the overall game. In 80-ball Bingo, the Bingo cards have 16 squares of four columns, each one of which has four rows.

In this variation of the game, there are two prizes on offer. The first one goes to the first player to complete any line going either horizontally, vertically or covering all four corners of the four middle squares. In total, there are four different variations of 80-ball Bingo and the prizes for each one differs.

90 Ball Bingo

Not only is 90 ball Bingo one of the biggest variations of the game, but it is also one of the most popular. The Bingo cards in this game has 15 numbers of each of them, and they have been divided into three rows of five. This game offers three prizes, and the biggest winner is the first person who is able to daub off an entire row of numbers.

The second prize is then awarded to the first player that can complete two rows, while the Full House prize is awarded to whichever player is able to daub off all 15 numbers.

Progressive Jackpot Bingo

Everyone wants to win the jackpot – it’s the easiest way to make a significant amount of money and greatly increase your prize pot in one go! However, not that many people know about different kinds of jackpots. When it comes to Bingo, there are two main kinds, namely progressive jackpots and set jackpots. The latter refers to a jackpot that is always available for wins, regardless of how many times it has been struck. All one needs to do in order to win a fixed jackpot is get a full house within a specific number of ball draws.

Should more than one player win a fixed jackpot, the total amount will be split equally between all the winning tickets that fall within the specified criteria of the game. In online Bingo, players will find that their accounts are automatically credited with their winnings.

On the other hand, progressive jackpots are becoming increasingly popular amongst players owing largely to the fact that the payouts that players can expect from them tend to be quite a bit bigger than the payouts one can expect from set jackpots. A progressive jackpot is initially funded by a set amount and each day, it increases based on the ticket sales of the previous day.

The more tickets that are bought in a particular game of online Bingo, the more the jackpot will continue to grow. Once a progressive jackpot has been won, it is then reset and gathers more value with each new ticket sold at your favourite NZD casino site.

Some progressive jackpots vary a great deal. These can also be setup as community jackpots, which means that a percentage of the jackpot will be paid to the player or players who trigger the jackpot. The remaining percentage will then be paid to other players who have bought tickets into the winning game of Bingo. Some progressive jackpots form part of a network, which gives more players a chance to win but also means there will be a bigger prize pot.

Online Bingo Chat Rooms

As online Bingo has evolved, so too has the way in which players communicate about the game. These days, most websites allow players to connect through online Bingo chat rooms. Once players enter the Bingo lobby when they log on, they will often find the option to start chatting in a room that was created by the operators of the Bingo site. These chat rooms can be entered as long as the player has an account with that specific operator.

Online Bingo chat rooms were created so that players might engage with what they enjoy most about the game and provides them with the social element that would otherwise be missing from online games. They are a great place for like-minded Bingo enthusiasts to connect with each other and to have great conversations about the game and everything that they love about it – almost exactly as one would do at a brick-and-mortar Bingo hall.

One of the best things about online Bingo chat rooms is the fact that there is little to no sense of competition at all. Every player knows that they are playing against the house and that it is all just a game of luck.

Over time, online Bingo chat rooms have also evolved to include Bingo-related lingo. For example, to wish other players good luck, one simply needs to type ‘GL’. Or, to congratulate winners and to say well done, ‘WD’ will suffice. Furthermore, if players are uncertain about something or need to ask a question, the Bingo chat room is a great place to ask questions and to get answers from other players who likely have first-hand experience in the areas you are unsure about or need a bit of help with.
